It’s hard to sit here and try to put together words to describe this love.  The feeling I have for this little girl.  Words that are worthy enough.  One year now separates us from the beautiful day Pixie was born.  One Year.  The BEST year.

With one year comes an overwhelming sense of emotion.  Gratitude.  Happiness.  Bittersweet emotions.  Being a mother is the greatest honor in the whole wide world.  It’s the biggest joy I have ever EVER known.  Watching her grow, watching her smile, watching her little personality shine.  It’s amazing.  I live for it.  Everyday.  There’s nothing else on this planet I’d rather be doing, but raising my little girl.  Holding her and nurturing her.  Watching her bloom.

With birthday’s come celebrations.  I was wondering if I’d hold it together.  I did.  Her party was a bit of a whirlwind.  A bit?  Who am I kidding.  Just like the theme, One Year in a Flash, it went by IN A FLASH.  Thankfully, it was VERY well documented by my two great photo friends and my little sister.  If you’d like to watch the video slideshow, click HERE.

The picture perfect start to a picture perfect party is a picture perfect invitation.  I custom designed these tri-fold invites in photoshop and ordered them on pearl paper from my photo lab.

Mary Anne of Contemporary Catering by Mary Anne did such a GRAND job on the food and presentation.  We spent months and months planning the look, feel and taste of Pixie’s special party.  It couldn’t have been more perfect.  My mother moved to North Carolina in August.  She’s ALWAYS been there for me when planning any event.  It was SUPER hard for me to do this without her.  (I know you couldn’t be there Momma Mia.  You were there in spirit but we missed your VERY MUCH.)  Mary Anne, thank you so much for all of your hard work and love for my little girl.  Without you, this party would have been sloppy joes and lunchmeat.  It really was amazing.  THANKS TO YOU!

Birthday girl.  She LOVED all of the attention!It’s amazing to watch her look at the world with such wonder and excitement.

I call Pixie “Birdie”.  Mary Anne and I found this birdhouse that was the perfect centerpiece for the food.  She also found the adorable Birdie perched on the house.  Birdie’s Birdhouse and yummy fruit waffles. Mmm.

The theme?  One Year in a Flash.  Photos.  Fun.  Lollipops.  Vintage cameras.  Santa Clause.  Happiness.  Red and white.  Polka Dots.  Birdhouses.  Love.  Candy Canes.  Snowflakes.  Celebration.  All of the above.

The party was held at a friends condo clubhouse.  (Thank you Bob, Jenny and Eli!!!)  It was the perfect place!  Here’s a shot of the dessert table, gift table where the time capsule was and the photo boards.  Jason was on the search for vintage cameras.  All over town.  He found some REALLY cool ones from used camera stores and thrifting.  They were placed sporadically throughout the food/drinks/gift tables.


I love her shy little smirk here.  She looks so happy.  So happy.  And look at that crazy wispy hair.  Makes my heart warm.

I wanted to tie in the photo theme with the food place cards.  I took photos of Pixie with her chalkboard and wrote each food item on the board. Three candy canes acted as a little photo stand for each food card.

Pixie, of course, loved posing and modeling for these!  This one was one of my favorites.  She’s peeking over…. “c’mon, haf sum of Pixie’s popcorn!”

Organizing and choosing photos for the slideshow and photo boards was a hefty two day task.  I took over three THOUSAND pictures of her in eleven months.  That may be a little crazy.  I call it love.  Aunt Cinni and MaMa helped me make the banners with a fancy cricket.  It was so much fun being so crafty.  Thank you, Monaghans!


My cousin, Ashley, made her camera onesie and adorable leggings with the Santa fur.  She’s sooo talented!  Etsy peeps made the headband and ruffle butt.

See the red OSU/bear stocking?  On Christmas morning last year, the nurses brought Pixie Jo into the hospital room snuggled inside this stocking.  It’s very near and dear to my heart.  While getting the Christmas decorations out of the tote, I pulled this stocking out and smiled.  I took a huge sniff to see if I could smell her newborn smell.  Nah, it smelled of basement mold and plastic tote.  Doesn’t matter.  The memories of her sweet little smell will last forever.

Pixie’s Time Capsule.  She will open it on her 18th birthday.  We asked everyone to bring something that represents today.

People thought of some REALLY cool ideas…
An iPhone full of photos and music (and a charger so she can turn it on when she is 18). A McDonald’s toy.  An angrybird.  Adele CD.  Glamour, hair and gossip magazines.  Newspaper articles about the Buckeyes.  Scrapbooks full of items of today including the latest fashion and music.  Receipts for common purchases such as gas, stamps, a bottle of Iced Tea and highlighters.  Photos of Pixie.  Photos of Mommy and Daddy.  Crazy photos of Mommy when she was in college and high school…that Mommy may not even be willing to share with her 18 year old.  :)  A twinkie (they say they last forever, we will know in 17 years).  Fashionable high heels.  Letters written to Pix (it’s killing me not to open these!).  And videos.  I think she will really appreciate opening this on December 23, 2028.  That seems like forever from now, but with how fast her first year flew by, I’m sure it will be here before we know it.

Presents!  We are still opening one toy a day.  It’s been a month since her party.  Spoiled girl!

Grandfather and Nannie found a vintage camera with the Christmas scene inside.  It is so magical.  Each side is different when you look through.  It plays music and lights up.  They even had the top engraved with a special message to the birthday girl.  A gift she will have and love forever.

My ONE YEAR OLD daughter has REAL Ugg’s.  Not look-a-likes.  Not “designer inspired” like her Momma’s.  Real ones.  She’s ONE.  Do I sound jealous much?!

We stayed in the CUTEST little cottage right on the Kalamazoo River.  Peterson Mill.  An old flour mill.  So much character!

Okay.  Let’s just say we were NOT the smartest bunch of beach goers.  The first day, we decided to ride our bikes to the beach.  We packed the backpack with all of the beach necessities…towels, books, suits and sunscreen.  Ya know, what you would normally do if YOU DIDN”T HAVE AN 8 MONTH OLD.

When we got there, we realized two things…

1.)  A baby needs shade.

2.) There is no shade at the beach.

We tried VERY hard to create our own little shady nook.  First, we tried to camp out as close as we could to the handicap sign near the parking lot.  It was casting a shade big enough for Pix’s little body.  Ten minutes later, the sun moved and the shade dwindled.  DUH.  So, we put our bikes in the sand and created a tent with our beach towels.  Ten minutes later, the sun moved and the shade dwindled.  OH MAN.  Yes, we broke down and rented the umbrella from the overpriced concession stand.  The joy of the umbrella lasted all of an hour.  The strong winds lifted the umbrella and it flew 20 feet behind us and landed IN a carseat where a 3 month old baby had been laying just minutes before.  LUCKILY, that family just walked down by the water.  It scared us to the point of packing up and heading home to much safer, less windy, shadier location.  The next day we bought an umbrella anchor and DROVE to the beach with a trunk full of DIFFERENT beach necessities.  The kind appropriate for an 8 month old.  Oh, parenthood.  How we learn.

Pixie is not so sure about the sand.  She kept face planting into it.  Silly girl.

Mommy and Daddy love each other.And our little family.

These were sand dunes that went on for miles.  There were lots of brave souls that were riding the dunes in jeeps, four wheelers, and other vehicles that were somehow concocted into a sand buggy.  It was kinda crazy watching them.  I’d cringe when they headed over the big hills going 30mph.  Children were sledding down the sand on what looked like skateboards and snow sleds.  Something I never expected to see in Michigan.  Feeding my girl on top of the dune.  A memory I will hold close to my heart forever.  So peaceful and beautiful.Feeding the ducks.  The mill owners had duck food for us to use.  These ducks would come around everyday waiting for Pix to feed them.  Douglas Beach.  A small public beach that felt very private.The most kissable cheeks in the world, right here.  We did LOTS of relaxing.  It was so tranquil sitting out by the mill along the stream.
Fenn Valley Winery.  And a sunset cruise on the Kalamazoo and into Lake Michigan.  It was BEAUTIFUL!We match with our jeggings on!Every night we would take a stroll along the water.  The town of Saugatuck had a fun nightlife.  Jason and I enjoyed the music and laughter from the sidewalks.  Pix enjoyed her zzzz’s in the stroller.

Jason posing like the bear.  Funny boy.Pix got this Barbie kite for Easter from Gramia.  She was SO excited to fly a kite.  She talked about it all morning.  And it was about the windiest day EVER.  Which is why Pix is wearing long pants!  Needless to say, the Barbie kite didn’t make it home.On the way back to Ohio, we made a quick stop in St. Joseph, Michigan so Pixie could visit the infamous carousel.

She loved it!

We celebrated our 3rd year Anniversary!  We went to the Kelton House where we said “I do” and toasted with our special flutes.  I love going back there.  It’s so very special to us.  I wore this dress to our wedding rehearsal and this is Jason’s wedding suit.

All the awesome women in my family got together to do the Alzheimer’s walk in honor of my grandmother.

My cousin made us all these adorable “Team Betty Boop” shirts.  Grandma loved Betty Boop.  (Great job Ash…you sure are working for those Atta Girl points!)

Pixie is now officially a gym rat.  She goes with me to every workout.  She loves it at That Gym on Grandview.
She moves from the trampoline, to the yoga mat, to the jumper, to our trainers arms.  It’s her little routine.

Happy Father’s Day, Daddee.

Our first Red,White and Boom as a family.  We joined the Abbitt’s for fun and fireworks.  And a couple of days later we went to the Gahanna fireworks with more friends and family.  She LOVED THEM!  It was so funny to see her big eyes watching the colorful bright display.  Even funnier to see her cheeks smashed with Poopa’s earplugs. I’m proud to be an American.  Where at least I know I’m free to show my cute bootie.

My new thang…

..coming up with fun things to write on the Ikea chalkboard I got on Mother’s Day.  You’ll probably see lots more of these on my posts.  Just something fun.

One of my gymnasts asked me to come speak at her middle school for career day. What? Chat about photography for a few hours? Absolutely!

A police officer, a librarian, a nurse, a dentist, a systems programmer, the special crimes unit, a teacher and many more other professions were present. Among them, I felt honored and proud to tell these 200 children how much I love my career. I get to make memories. This isn’t just ink on paper, I am creating heirlooms that last forever.

The children rotated to different careers they were interested in hearing about. We had LOTS of fun learning about photography, composition, the difference in lenses, the best time to shoot and lots more.

There are 25.8 million Americans with diabetes.  It was my pleasure to help the American Diabetes Association beat and cure the insidious disease.  Research for a cure will not happen without fundraising.  This breakfast was held to educate and thank corporations willing to donate for the cause.  I was there to photograph it.

When I arrived at The Blackwell on Ohio State’s campus, I was welcomed by the sounds of Hang on Sloopy.  I turned around and was given a big hug from Brutus.   That much fun at 8 AM, yes, don’t mind if I do.

My very first Mother’s Day.  I will remember it forever.

Family loveliness. And lots of it.   That’s what I had this weekend. My best cousin (and by best cousin, I mean best friend and she happens to be my cousin) lives in Cincinnati. My Momma Mia was in North Carolina and Jason was on a four wheeling trip so Pixie Pie and I had our first road trip down to visit my cousin and her family. They just moved into a HUGE beautiful house. I thought I was going to go down and help her unpack, but when I walked in everything was all put together. So we had a fabulous cookout and watched the men set up the trampoline as the kids ran around. They were SO excited to get on that trampoline. Addie Mae (my cousins ten month old) and Pixie Jo were cuddled and loved on soooo much. They napped and pooed and played. We laughed and shared stories and ate strawberry shortcake. A great day to say the least. Then in the evening, after jumping on the tramp, we headed to Ikea, where we tried very VERY hard to keep the cash in the wallet. It didn’t work.  A GREAT Mother’s Day with some awesome mommas.

On the way to Cinci, I stopped at the store to grab some breakfast and drop off Jason’s dry cleaning.  He needed his patrol uniform for Tuesday morning.  I remembered Sunday.  Yikes, hurry to the store!

So while carrying her into the store, plus two bags of clothes, I ran over to the produce section to grab some pre-sliced apples.  The bags of laundry were getting all twisted around my arm and cutting off my circulation.  So here I am standing in the middle of the grocery store with 13 pounds of baby on one arm and 20 pounds of clothes on the other.  Yes, I dropped the apples.  All over the floor.  The poor grocery store clerk.  She stood there for ten minutes trying to help me unspin the string from the laundry bag from my now purple arm.

No, I had no time for make-up.

Yay…Ikea!  Raise your hand if you love this store.  See…Pixie does.
Ry carried this scrub brush around the whole store.  It was quite entertaining for him.  He “scrubbed” everything he saw.  Kids are hilarious.
Pixie wrote this beautiful poem, made her OWN footprints with pretty pink paint, cut and glued it on cute paper AND went to the post office in North Carolina to mail this to me so I could open it on Mother’s Day.  Isn’t that so sweet of HER?  (Love you Mom!)

Every Easter, Momma Mia and Richard have an egg hunt with all of the grandchildren. Momma spends a great amount of time putting together special baskets for each child and makes over 300 eggs with candy and coins. The kids love it!

Every year in the past, I always felt sad leaving the egg hunt.  Just a little jealous of all the little families sharing special memories.  Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed watching my nieces and nephews gathering eggs and socializing with my siblings.  But it’s just not the same without a little.

Finally.  Finally we have our own little.  Finally we are one of those little families.   Finally we get to take our own family picture and OUR little gets her own little basket full of goodies.

Pixie spotted the eggs in the tree.  Such a good little egg hunter.

Asking my sister to take this picture of us and then seeing it on the back of the camera really made things real.  Real fun.  I’m so happy.  Holidays are going to be so much brighter with our little.

I’ve been dreaming up this shoot since before Pix was born.  I wanted to do a newborn shoot with Pixie laying on one of the shelves.  My Auntie Ang (bookstore owner) and her daughter kept passing some nasty cold back and forth, preventing us from going when Pixie Pie was just born.

So here we have it.  A fabulous shoot of my little.  In a bookstore.  With lots of color and fun.

So she’s not a newborn.  Who says we still can’t put her on the shelf?  Under supervision, of course!
